Do I Need to Sort Photographs Before Scanning Them?

No. In most cases you do not need to sort every photograph before scanning. If the collection already has useful order, preserve it. If it is already mixed, you can digitise it in manageable batches and organise the digital files afterwards.

Trying to identify every person, date and event before scanning is one of the easiest ways to make a family photograph project feel too large to begin.

When you should preserve the existing order

If photographs are in an album, labelled envelope, slide box or family packet, that structure may carry information. Keep those groups together until you have decided whether they matter.

An album page can tell you sequence and relationships. Handwriting can identify people or places. A slide box may follow the order of a holiday or year. Even an apparently random envelope can be meaningful to the person who assembled it.

When sorting first can help

A little preparation is useful if you have obvious material that should not be part of the project: blank prints, receipts, duplicates you are certain nobody wants, or unrelated paperwork. But there is no need to turn this into a complete family-history exercise before digitisation.

If several relatives need to make decisions, scanning first can actually make selection easier because everyone can review copies without passing the only originals between households.

A simple way to organise a mixed collection

Start with broad containers rather than perfect chronology. For example:

  • Box 1 — loose family photographs
  • Album 1 — grandparents
  • Slides 1 — labelled holidays
  • Negatives 1 — unknown 35mm strips

Those labels can become the first digital folder structure. More detailed names and dates can be added later where they are known.

What if I want Only Yesterday to organise it?

That is part of the service for larger family collections. You can give us a mixed collection as it is. We assess the formats and existing organisation, agree how much sorting is genuinely useful, then mirror or improve that structure in the digital files.

For a first enquiry, send a few phone photographs through Start a Project. A rough idea of the amount is enough.
