What Is the Best Way to Digitise Old Photo Albums?
The best method depends on the album, but you usually should not take an old photo album apart before deciding how it will be digitised. The page order, captions, handwriting and layout may be part of the family record, not just packaging around the photographs.
Start by deciding whether you want pages, individual photographs, or both
A whole-page scan preserves the album as an object: where photographs sit, handwritten captions, dates, tickets or other material on the page. Individual scans are better when you want photographs that can be viewed, printed and shared separately.
For many family albums, the most useful result is a combination: whole-page images for context plus separate files for the photographs where the album construction makes that practical.
Do not remove photographs simply to make scanning easier
Slip-in photographs may be straightforward to remove and replace. Older glued or mounted photographs may not be. Fragile pages, adhesive and ageing paper can make intervention risky.
Before removing anything, photograph a few typical pages and assess how the album is constructed. If a photograph cannot be safely removed, it may be better to capture it in place.
Preserve the album order in the filenames
Digital files are much easier to understand when their order mirrors the original. A simple structure such as “Album 01 — Page 001” and numbered individual photographs prevents the digital copy becoming another unsorted folder.
Captions can be preserved through whole-page scans or added to filenames/metadata where useful and practical.
Use an appropriate resolution for the original photographs
The aim is to capture enough information for normal viewing, sharing and sensible reprinting without creating unnecessarily complicated files for the customer. Only Yesterday uses a high-quality standard and recommends a different approach only where the original or intended use justifies it.
What about fragile albums?
If pages are brittle, photographs are stuck, bindings are failing or the album has unusual historical value, stop before forcing it flat or removing material. The handling method matters more than speed.
Only Yesterday photo album scanning
